Family, Early Life and Education

He was born on 6 January 1967 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His name at birth was AS Dilip Kumar which he later changed to AR Rahman. Rahman has inherited music from his father. His father RK Shekhar used to give music in Malayalam films. Rahman received music education from Master Dhanraj. At the age of 11, Rahman used to play keyboard (synthesiser) for the band Roots with his childhood friend Shivamani. He used to work for Ilayaraja’s band. Rahman is credited with founding the band “Nemesis Avenue” from Chennai. 

He played keyboard, piano, harmonium and guitar. He considers the synthesiser to be a wonderful amalgamation of art and technology. His father died when Rahman was nine years old and his family had to sell musical instruments for money. Things got so bad that his family had to convert to Islam. While working in the band group, he also received a scholarship from Trinity College of Music, London, from where he earned a degree in Western Classical Music.

AR Rahman’s wife’s name is Saira Banu. They have three children – Khadija, Rahim and Aman. He is also a relative of South Indian actor Rashin Rahman. Rahman is the uncle of music composer G V Prakash Kumar.

Rahman started recording his own music in 1991. In 1992, he was invited by film director Mani Ratnam to compose music for his film Roja. The film was a musical hit and Rahman won the Filmfare Award in the first film itself. 

Rahman’s winning streak that started with this award continues till date. More than 200 crore recordings of Rahman’s songs have been sold. 

Today he is counted among the top ten music composers in the world. He has composed music in films like Tehzeeb, Bombay, Dil Se, Rangeela, Taal, Jeans, Pukar, Fiza, Lagaan, Mangal Pandey, Swadesh, Rang De Basanti, Jodha-Akbar, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Yuvraj, Slum Dog Millionaire, Ghajini. Have given. He made the album “Vande Mataram” in 1997 on the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence, which was a huge success. 

Another important work of his was the album “Jana Gana Mana”, directed by Bharat Bala, in which many eminent personalities associated with Indian classical music contributed. 

He himself wrote jingles for many commercials and composed their music. He formed a troupe of dancers from Tamil cinema along with well-known choreographers Prabhu Deva and Shobhana, who gave stage performances with Michael Jackson.

Awards and Honors

A six-time National Film Award winner and recipient of six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, he has fifteen Filmfare Awards and sixteen Filmfare Awards South for his music.

In 2006, he received an award from Stanford University for his contributions to global music.

He has received honorary doctorates from Middlesex University, Aligarh Muslim University, Anna University in Chennai and Miami University in Ohio. 

A street was named in his honour in Markham, Ontario, Canada in November 2013.
